I am currently a Professor at the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research which is part of the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University, NSW. I was awarded my PhD (“The organisational and communication implications of electronic ordering for hospital pathology services”) at The University of Sydney in 2009. I am currently involved in investigating the innovative potential and impact of digital health technologies in clinical and hospital ancillary settings. 

I have an international service record across numerous specialist fields. I spent eight years (1993 – 2001) working in the National Health Service (NHS) in England including the North Thames Health Authority in London. During this period, I worked in senior research and executive positions including as the NHS Assistant Director of Classifications for the NHS Centre for Coding and Classifications (1995 – 1997) and as the Co-coordinator for the Coronary Heart Disease Programme for the Royal College of Physicians in London (1999 – 2002).

I was appointed Professor of Diagnostic Informatics on 1 July 2016. I have produced over 300 peer reviewed journal and conference publications and 28 monographs, books and book chapters. I have published widely across many health care subjects and topics including quality care, pathology, aged care, evaluation, digital health decision support, epidemiology, health outcomes as well as health and diagnostic informatics.

I was admitted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Science (Research) Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2015 in recognition of my contribution to health and pathology informatics researcher across the areas of quality and safety. In 2019 I was admitted as a Fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. In 2020 I became a Foundational Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Digital Health. In 2022 I was conferred the title of Honorary 
Visiting Professor at the Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences (HNU), Germany in recognition of my contribution to the establishment of a joint PhD program between HNU and Macquarie University.

I am recognised as an ARC Expert Reviewer of International Standing and I am currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Medical Informatics. I am a regular reviewer for over 20 world-class journals and five major international conferences and research funding bodies. My supervision record includes a cohort of eighteen higher degree students. This includes nine PhD students (including three on ARC or NHMRC-funded scholarships).
